Visas can be obtained from Cape Verde's consular services or on arrival. Citizens of the European Union and the United Kingdom are exempt from visas for stays of up to 30 days.
The visa waiver for 36 countries (European Union, United Kingdom, Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland and the Vatican) came into force on January 1, 2019, for anyone visiting Cape Verde for tourism or business . However, there is a need to pay the Airport Security Fee (TSA), for foreign citizens who land in Cape Verde or are traveling between islands will. To do this, you must have a valid passport and pre-register, or pay directly when you enter the country.
On international flights, TSA has a value of 3,400 Cape Verdean escudos (about 31 euros) and will be charged when pre-registering on the EASE online platform. It must be done up to 5 days before starting the visit. If you didn´t make the payment before, it can be done at the time of entry, but it may take a little bit longer.
It is recommended to use light and fresh clothes during the dry season and a raincoat and a jacket during the rainy season. The use of appropriate footwear for mountain hikes is highly recommended. Due to the type of terrain, sometimes with steep slopes, the use of sticks is advisable. The consumption of bottled water is strongly recommended. Due to the reduced number of refueling points during walking routes, you should always carry an extra amount of water and a food reserve.
There are two ways to get to São Nicolau. There is a connection by sea through the islands of São Vicente, Sal, Boavista and Santiago, all connections operated by CV Interilhas (www.cvinterilhas.cv) to Tarrafal. At the Preguiça aerodrome, located 10 minutes from the village of Ribeira Brava, there are air connections operated by Binter Cabo Verde (www.binter.cv) with direct connections to the islands of Santiago and Sal.
Transport: The conventional taxi service does not exist in São Nicolau. However, public transport through “Hiaces”, which transport several passengers is the norm and is operational throughout the island. These are actually small mini-buses that economically transport passengers across the island. In each village there is a specific place, which is not marked, where the vehicles stop to collect passengers. You should ask the population where these places are. For example, in Vila de Ribeira Brava it is located in Terreiro, and in Tarrafal, it is located near the pier. It is possible to rent a car (average value € 50 per day) or even a quad bike at the various operators in Tarrafal or Vila de Ribeira Brava.
